Brand: Isuprel, Medihaler-Iso
Isoproterenol is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a non-selective beta-adrenergic agonist. It stimulates both beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors, leading to increased heart rate, contractility, and bronchodilation. It is used to treat bradycardia (slow heart rate), heart block, and bronchospasm. However, due to its non-selective nature, it can cause adverse cardiovascular effects.
Used for bradycardia, heart block, bronchospasm, and occasionally for asthma.
Outcome:
Reduced effectiveness of isoproterenol and potential for adverse cardiovascular effects.
Mechanism:
Beta-blockers antagonize the effects of isoproterenol at beta-adrenergic receptors.
Outcome:
Hypokalemia, which can enhance the risk of cardiac arrhythmias with isoproterenol.
Mechanism:
Diuretics can cause potassium loss.
Outcome:
May slightly reduce the absorption of isoproterenol.
Mechanism:
Changes in gastric pH.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release oral formulation (Year: Unlikely, <1% confidence)
Based on declining usage and the availability of more selective beta-agonists, there is a low ( <5%) likelihood of new regulatory action in the next 5 years.
