Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid production. It belongs to the benzimidazole class of drugs and works by irreversibly blocking the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system of gastric parietal cells, the final step in gastric acid secretion. This action effectively suppresses basal and stimulated acid secretion, regardless of the stimulus.
For treating stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and erosive esophagitis.

Mechanism:
Binding of lansoprazole
Outcome:
Slightly decreased lansoprazole absorption
Mechanism:
Altered gastric pH
Most likely new formulation: Modified-release formulations for improved patient compliance (Year: 2025, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and patent expirations, generic lansoprazole is expected to maintain a high market share.
