Leuprorelin is a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. It initially stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). However, continuous administration leads to downregulation of GnRH receptors, suppressing the release of LH and FSH, effectively reducing sex hormone levels (testosterone in men and estrogen in women). This makes it useful in treating hormone-sensitive conditions like prostate cancer, endometriosis, and precocious puberty.
Used to treat prostate cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and precocious puberty.
