Lidocaine is a local anesthetic (numbing medication) and antiarrhythmic drug (medication used to treat irregular heartbeats). It works by blocking sodium channels, which prevents nerve signals from being transmitted, thus causing numbness in the affected area. As an antiarrhythmic, it helps restore normal heart rhythm by suppressing abnormal electrical activity in the heart.
Used as a local anesthetic for minor surgical procedures, dental work, and to relieve pain and itching from skin conditions; also used to treat certain types of irregular heartbeats.
