Lisinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor primarily used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, and after heart attacks. It belongs to the class of vasodilators, meaning it widens blood vessels to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. Lisinopril works by blocking the production of a substance called angiotensin II, which narrows blood vessels. This action helps relax the blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.
For treating hypertension, heart failure, and improving survival after heart attacks.
Fetal toxicity: Use of drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin system during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy reduces fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and death. Resulting oligohydramnios can be associated with fetal lung hypoplasia and skeletal deformations. Potential neonatal adverse effects include skull hypoplasia, anuria, hypotension, renal failure, and death. When pregnancy is detected, discontinue lisinopril as soon as possible.
