Maprotiline is a tetracyclic antidepressant medication primarily used to treat major depressive disorder. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and, to a lesser extent, serotonin in the brain, increasing the levels of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft. Maprotiline belongs to the class of norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (NRIs) and is structurally similar to tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) but with a distinct pharmacological profile.
