Brand: Choletec
Mebrofenin is a diagnostic imaging agent used in hepatobiliary scintigraphy to evaluate liver function and biliary tract patency. It is an anionic diisopropyl iminodiacetic acid (IDA) derivative that is taken up by hepatocytes and excreted into the bile. This allows visualization of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and small intestine, helping to diagnose conditions like acute cholecystitis, biliary obstruction, and bile leaks.
Used for diagnostic imaging of the hepatobiliary system.
Outcome:
Reduced mebrofenin uptake
Mechanism:
Competition for hepatocyte uptake
Outcome:
Increased mebrofenin clearance
Mechanism:
Enzyme induction
Outcome:
Minor changes in gallbladder contractility
Mechanism:
Stimulant effect
Most likely new formulation: Technetium-99m labeled mebrofenin with improved imaging characteristics (2025, 70% confidence).
Based on current usage patterns and clinical trial data, mebrofenin is expected to maintain its approved status for hepatobiliary imaging with a 95% likelihood over the next 5 years.
