Brand: Demerol, Dolantal, Pethidine
Meperidine, also known as pethidine, is a synthetic opioid pain medication. It is classified as a phenylpiperidine derivative and acts primarily as a mu-opioid receptor agonist. Meperidine is indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain. It has a rapid onset of action but a relatively short duration of effect compared to other opioids. Meperidine is also used during childbirth and before or after surgery.
For the management of moderate to severe pain, during childbirth, and before or after surgery.
Meperidine may cause seizures, particularly in patients with renal impairment or those receiving high doses. It can also interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) leading to serious, sometimes fatal, reactions. Accumulation of the toxic metabolite normeperidine can lead to neurotoxicity, including tremors, myoclonus, and seizures. Use caution in patients with seizure disorders, renal impairment, or taking MAOIs.
