Mesna is a chemoprotective agent used to prevent hemorrhagic cystitis caused by ifosfamide and, less commonly, cyclophosphamide. It works by binding to and inactivating acrolein, a toxic metabolite of these chemotherapy drugs that is responsible for bladder damage. Mesna is classified as a detoxifying agent.
Used to prevent ifosfamide- and cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.
