Methazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used primarily to treat glaucoma. It works by decreasing the production of aqueous humor, the fluid that fills the front part of the eye. This helps lower the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), which is beneficial in glaucoma. It is also occasionally used to treat other conditions where reducing fluid pressure is needed, such as certain types of epilepsy and altitude sickness.
