Metolazone is a thiazide-like diuretic used to treat fluid retention (edema) in conditions like heart failure, kidney disease, and liver cirrhosis. It works by increasing the excretion of sodium and water from the body by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron in the kidneys. Metolazone is considered a long-acting diuretic and is often used when other diuretics are ineffective.
