Mirtazapine is an atypical antidepressant primarily used to treat major depressive disorder. It belongs to the piperazinoazepine class and works by enhancing noradrenergic and serotonergic neurotransmission through antagonism of central presynaptic alpha2-adrenergic autoreceptors and heteroreceptors. It also acts as an antagonist at 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptors, and a potent H1 antagonist, which may contribute to its sedative effects. Mirtazapine has a relatively low incidence of sexual side effects compared to some other antidepressants.
