Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog used for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and in combination with mifepristone for medical abortion. It works by replacing the protective prostaglandins that are normally present in the stomach. These prostaglandins are depleted by NSAIDs, leading to ulcer formation. Misoprostol also causes uterine contractions and cervical ripening, making it useful in inducing labor or managing postpartum hemorrhage.
Used for preventing NSAID-induced gastric ulcers, medical abortion, labor induction, and postpartum hemorrhage management.
Misoprostol is contraindicated in women of childbearing potential who are not using effective contraception and in pregnant women for the prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers. It can cause uterine contractions, miscarriage, premature birth, and birth defects.
