Brand: Mivacron
Mivacurium chloride is a short-acting, nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used adjunctively in anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation and provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation. It belongs to the class of drugs known as neuromuscular blockers and works by competitively blocking the binding of acetylcholine to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, thus preventing muscle contraction.
For facilitating endotracheal intubation and providing skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation.
Outcome:
Increased neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism:
Synergistic effect at the neuromuscular junction
Outcome:
Increased neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism:
Pre-synaptic inhibition of acetylcholine release
Outcome:
Reversal of neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism:
Increased acetylcholine levels at the neuromuscular junction
No significant innovations are predicted for mivacurium due to its withdrawn status. Research and development efforts are focused on newer, safer neuromuscular blocking agents.
Due to its withdrawal, the likelihood of mivacurium being reintroduced to the market is very low.
