Brand: Singulair, Montair, Montelukast Sandoz, Montelukast Teva
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used to prevent and treat asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever). It belongs to a class of medications that block the action of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory chemicals released by the body in response to allergens. By blocking leukotrienes, montelukast helps reduce airway inflammation, mucus production, and bronchoconstriction, thus relieving symptoms of asthma and allergies.
For the prevention and long-term treatment of asthma and to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever).
Serious neuropsychiatric events have been reported in patients taking montelukast, including agitation, aggression, anxiousness, depression, disorientation, dreams/nightmares, hallucinations, insomnia, irritability, restlessness, suicidal ideation and behavior (including completed suicide), and tremor. Assess patients for neuropsychiatric events and discontinue montelukast if such events occur.
