Generic: Nitrite
Nitrites are a class of chemical compounds containing one or more nitrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom. In medicine, inorganic nitrites like sodium nitrite are primarily used as antidotes for cyanide poisoning. They also have vasodilatory effects and can be used to treat angina. However, their use in angina is less common due to the availability of other more effective and safer medications. Nitrites can be found in some processed meats as preservatives.
Used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning and historically for angina.
Outcome:
Severe hypotension.
Mechanism:
Additive vasodilatory effects.
Outcome:
Increased risk of methemoglobinemia.
Mechanism:
Both can oxidize hemoglobin.
Outcome:
Synergistic effect in cyanide poisoning treatment.
Mechanism:
Combined effect enhances cyanide detoxification.
Most likely new formulation: Controlled-release nitrite for cyanide poisoning treatment (Year: 2028, 30% confidence).
Based on current usage trends and ongoing research, there is a low (5%) likelihood of significant regulatory changes for nitrite in the next 5 years.
