Norfloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair, thereby halting bacterial growth. It is effective against a wide range of gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria.
For the treatment of bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, prostatitis, gonorrhea, and certain gastrointestinal infections.
Fluoroquinolones, including norfloxacin, are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, particularly the Achilles tendon. This risk is further increased in older patients, those with renal impairment, and those receiving concomitant corticosteroid therapy. Peripheral neuropathy has also been reported.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Norfloxacin can inhibit the metabolism of warfarin.
Outcome:
Decreased absorption of norfloxacin
Mechanism:
Chelation with calcium.
Outcome:
Potentially increased caffeine levels
Mechanism:
Inhibition of caffeine metabolism.
Most likely new formulation: extended-release formulation for improved patient compliance (Year: 2026, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and resistance patterns, there is a 20% likelihood of increased restrictions on norfloxacin use within the next 5 years.
