Generic: Ovine Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone
oCRH, or ovine corticotropin-releasing hormone, is a peptide hormone identical to the endogenous CRH found in sheep. It's primarily used in diagnostic testing to assess the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, specifically the responsiveness of the pituitary gland to CRH stimulation. It is not intended for therapeutic use.
Used in diagnostic testing of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
Outcome:
Suppressed response to oCRH
Mechanism:
Negative feedback on the HPA axis.
Outcome:
Reduced ACTH response
Mechanism:
Antiserotonergic effects.
Outcome:
May slightly increase cortisol levels
Mechanism:
Stimulation of the HPA axis.
Most likely future development: use in combination with other diagnostic tools for refined HPA axis assessment (Year: 2026, 70% confidence).
Given limited clinical development for therapeutic use, regulatory approval for therapeutic applications is unlikely in the near future (<10% likelihood in the next 5 years).
