Brand: Sandostatin, Sandostatin LAR
Octreotide is a synthetic octapeptide analog of somatostatin, a naturally occurring hormone that inhibits the release of various hormones, including growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin. It is primarily used to treat acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome, and other conditions associated with excessive hormone secretion. Octreotide mimics the actions of somatostatin, binding to somatostatin receptors and reducing the secretion of these hormones.
Used to treat acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome, and other conditions with excessive hormone secretion, including variceal bleeding.
Outcome:
Increased cyclosporine levels
Mechanism:
Reduced cyclosporine metabolism
Outcome:
Bradycardia
Mechanism:
Additive effects on heart rate
Outcome:
Delayed octreotide absorption
Mechanism:
Slower gastric emptying
Most likely new formulation: long-acting octreotide implant (2025, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a 80% likelihood of octreotide remaining a first-line treatment for acromegaly for the next 5 years.
