Oestrogen, or estrogen, refers to a group of steroid hormones primarily responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics. The three major naturally occurring estrogens in women are estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3). Estradiol is the most potent and prevalent of these during reproductive years. Oestrogens exert their effects by binding to estrogen receptors within cells, influencing gene expression and various physiological processes. They play a crucial role in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and bone health. Oestrogens are also present in males, albeit at much lower levels, and contribute to sperm maturation and other functions.
Used for hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women, contraception, and treatment of certain cancers.
Estrogens increase the risk of endometrial cancer in women with a uterus. The addition of a progestin reduces this risk. Estrogens, with or without progestins, should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals and risks for the individual woman.
