Brand: Dynapen, Diclocil, Pathocil
Dicloxacillin is a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class. It is used to treat infections caused by susceptible gram-positive bacteria, particularly staphylococci. It is resistant to breakdown by staphylococcal beta-lactamase enzymes, making it effective against penicillinase-producing strains of staphylococci that are resistant to many other penicillins. Dicloxacillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
For the treatment of infections caused by susceptible gram-positive bacteria, particularly penicillinase-producing staphylococci.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Dicloxacillin may interfere with vitamin K metabolism.
Outcome:
Reduced contraceptive efficacy
Mechanism:
Potential alteration of gut flora affecting estrogen metabolism.
Outcome:
Decreased absorption
Mechanism:
Food can delay or slightly reduce the absorption of dicloxacillin.
Most likely new formulation: extended-release oral formulation (Year: 2026, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage patterns and emerging resistance data, there is a 20% likelihood of increased restrictions on dicloxacillin use in the next 5 years.
