Brand: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR
Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant medication used primarily to treat partial seizures, including those with or without secondary generalization. It is structurally related to carbamazepine but has a different metabolic profile, potentially leading to fewer drug interactions and side effects. Oxcarbazepine works by stabilizing neuronal membranes and reducing the repetitive firing of nerve cells in the brain, thus preventing seizures.
Used primarily for the treatment of partial seizures.
Oxcarbazepine can cause serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Patients should be monitored for skin rash and other allergic reactions.
