Brand: Pavulon
Pancuronium bromide is a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used as an adjunct to general anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation and to provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation. It is a bisquaternary aminosteroid derivative that acts as a competitive antagonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, preventing acetylcholine from depolarizing the muscle fiber and causing paralysis.
Used as a muscle relaxant during surgery and mechanical ventilation.
Outcome:
Increased neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism:
Additive effect on neuromuscular junction
Outcome:
Increased neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism:
Ganglionic blockade
Outcome:
May decrease or increase neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism:
Complex interaction
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation (Year 2028, 20% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, the likelihood of new pancuronium formulations being approved in the next 5 years is low ( <10%).
