Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps regulate mood, anxiety, and other functions.
