Brand: Elmiron, Pentosan, Hyalgan
Pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) is a semi-synthetic, sulfated polysaccharide derived from beechwood xylan. It is classified as a disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug (DMOAD) and is also used to treat interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). PPS is thought to work in osteoarthritis by improving cartilage health and reducing inflammation. In IC/BPS, its mechanism is less clear, but it is believed to help restore the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer that protects the bladder wall.
For the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.
