Phentolamine is an alpha-adrenergic antagonist that blocks the effects of norepinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter that can cause blood vessels to narrow. It's used to treat high blood pressure, particularly during surgery or in hypertensive emergencies caused by pheochromocytoma (a tumor that releases hormones that raise blood pressure). It can also be used to treat extravasation of intravenous drugs that cause tissue damage.
