Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a decongestant and appetite suppressant. It was commonly used in over-the-counter (OTC) cold and allergy medications and weight-loss products. However, due to an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke, particularly in women, the FDA requested the withdrawal of PPA-containing products from the market in 2000. It is no longer available for medicinal use in the United States.
