Fosphenytoin is a prodrug of phenytoin, an anticonvulsant medication. It is used to treat seizures, including status epilepticus and prevention of seizures following neurosurgery. Fosphenytoin is rapidly converted to phenytoin in the body, which exerts its anticonvulsant effects by stabilizing neuronal membranes and reducing the spread of seizure activity. It belongs to the hydantoin class of antiepileptic drugs.
