Pimecrolimus is a topical calcineurin inhibitor, a type of medication that suppresses the immune system. It is used to treat atopic dermatitis (eczema), a chronic inflammatory skin condition. By inhibiting calcineurin, pimecrolimus reduces the activity of T-cells, which play a key role in the inflammatory response associated with eczema. This helps to alleviate the symptoms of eczema such as itching, redness, and skin lesions.
For the short-term and non-continuous chronic treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema).
Although a causal relationship has not been established, rare cases of lymphoma and skin cancer have been reported in patients using pimecrolimus. Patients should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation.
