Pindolol is a non-selective beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure and angina (chest pain). It belongs to the class of drugs known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, which work by blocking the effects of adrenaline on the heart and blood vessels. Unlike some other beta-blockers, pindolol has intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA), meaning it can mildly stimulate the heart while also blocking its response to adrenaline. This can result in a smaller decrease in resting heart rate and cardiac output compared to beta-blockers without ISA.
Used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina (chest pain).
Outcome:
Severe rebound hypertension
Mechanism:
Additive effects on blood pressure regulation.
Outcome:
Decreased antihypertensive effect
Mechanism:
NSAIDs can reduce the effectiveness of beta-blockers.
Outcome:
Reduced absorption of pindolol
Mechanism:
Antacids can bind to pindolol in the GI tract.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release pindolol (2025, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and patent expiry, generic pindolol market share is predicted to increase by 15% within the next 5 years.
