Pioglitazone is an oral antidiabetic drug belonging to the thiazolidinedione (TZD) class. It works by improving insulin sensitivity in muscle, fat, and liver cells, thereby helping to lower blood glucose levels. Pioglitazone is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes, often in combination with other medications like metformin or sulfonylureas, when lifestyle changes and single-agent therapy are insufficient.
