Polythiazide is a thiazide diuretic used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema). It belongs to the class of benzothiadiazine diuretics and works by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron, increasing urine output and lowering blood volume, which in turn helps reduce blood pressure. It can also be used to manage edema associated with heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease.
For treating high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema) associated with heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease.
Outcome:
Increased risk of digoxin toxicity due to hypokalemia

Polythiazide can cause potassium loss, increasing the risk of digoxin toxicity.
Outcome:
Decreased absorption of polythiazide
Mechanism:
Binding of polythiazide in the GI tract.
Outcome:
Slight decrease in polythiazide absorption
Mechanism:
Altered GI pH.
