Brand: Pravachol, Selektine, Lipostat
Pravastatin is a member of the drug class known as statins and is used to lower cholesterol. It is a synthetically produced member of a class of inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, an enzyme which catalyzes an early step in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. By inhibiting the production of cholesterol, pravastatin helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol that may build up on the walls of the arteries and contribute to cardiovascular disease.
Lowering cholesterol levels to prevent heart attacks and strokes in patients with high risk.
Outcome:
Increased risk of rhabdomyolysis
Mechanism:
Both drugs affect muscle metabolism.
Outcome:
Reduced pravastatin absorption
Mechanism:
Binding of pravastatin in the gut.
Outcome:
Slightly reduced pravastatin absorption
Mechanism:
Binding of pravastatin.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation (Year: 2026, 70% confidence)
Based on usage patterns and clinical trial data, there is a <1% likelihood of Pravastatin receiving a black box warning for rhabdomyolysis in the next 5 years.
