Probenecid is a uricosuric drug primarily used to treat gout and hyperuricemia. It inhibits the renal tubular reabsorption of uric acid, increasing its excretion in the urine and lowering serum uric acid levels. Probenecid can also be used to enhance the effectiveness of certain antibiotics like penicillin by delaying their renal excretion and prolonging their half-life in the body.
