Brand: Pro-Banthine
Propantheline bromide is an anticholinergic medication used to treat symptoms caused by excessive activity of the parasympathetic nervous system. It belongs to a class of drugs known as antimuscarinics or antispasmodics. These drugs work by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contractions and glandular secretions in various parts of the body. Propantheline specifically targets muscarinic receptors, reducing spasms and cramps in the stomach, intestines, bladder, and other smooth muscles.
Used to treat symptoms of an overactive bladder and reduce stomach acid production.
Outcome:
Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding.
Mechanism:
Propantheline can slow down gastrointestinal motility, increasing contact time of potassium chloride with the intestinal mucosa.
Outcome:
Increased risk of drowsiness and other anticholinergic effects.
Mechanism:
Additive anticholinergic effects.
Outcome:
Reduced absorption of propantheline.
Mechanism:
Antacids can alter the pH of the gastrointestinal tract.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation for improved patient compliance (Year: 2026, 60% confidence)
Based on usage trends and reported adverse effects, there is a low ( <5%) likelihood of regulatory changes affecting propantheline's availability in the next 5 years.
