Radium is a radioactive element and a known carcinogen. While it was historically used in medicine for its radioactive properties, its use has been largely discontinued due to significant safety concerns and the development of safer and more effective alternatives. Historically, it was used in the form of radium salts for conditions like arthritis and cancer, but these applications are obsolete. It now has limited uses in the treatment of certain bone metastases in prostate cancer.
Used in targeted alpha-particle therapy for bone metastases in castration-resistant prostate cancer.
Exposure to ionizing radiation can increase the risk of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and bone marrow failure. Deaths due to hematologic adverse reactions have occurred in patients treated with Radium Ra 223 dichloride. Monitor complete blood counts prior to each dose. Radium Ra 223 dichloride is not recommended for use in combination with docetaxel and prednisone/prednisolone outside of clinical trials. In clinical trials, an increased risk of fractures and deaths occurred in patients treated with Radium Ra 223 dichloride in combination with docetaxel and prednisone/prednisolone, compared to patients treated with placebo in combination with docetaxel and prednisone/prednisolone.
Most likely new formulation: Targeted alpha therapy conjugates for other cancers (Year: 2028, 30% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low likelihood of significant expansion of approved indications for radium-223 in the next 5 years.
