Refludan (lepirudin) is an anticoagulant drug that directly inhibits thrombin. It is a recombinant form of hirudin, a naturally occurring anticoagulant found in the saliva of medicinal leeches. Lepirudin is used to prevent and treat blood clots in patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), a serious condition characterized by a low platelet count and an increased risk of thrombosis.
