Remdesivir is a broad-spectrum antiviral medication and a nucleotide analog prodrug. It is administered intravenously and was developed by the biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences. Originally intended for the treatment of Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus infections, remdesivir received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of COVID-19 in 2020. It works by inhibiting viral RNA polymerase, thus halting viral replication.
