Remifentanil is a potent, short-acting synthetic opioid analgesic drug used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia, as well as for sedation in critically ill patients. It belongs to the 4-anilidopiperidine class of opioids and acts as a selective μ-opioid receptor agonist. Its rapid onset and offset are due to its rapid metabolism by non-specific esterases in the blood and tissues.
Used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia and sedation in critically ill patients.
REMIFENTANIL CAN CAUSE RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION. Appropriate resuscitative equipment and personnel trained in its use must be readily available whenever remifentanil is administered. Monitor respiration and pulse oximetry continuously during administration.
