Reserpine is an indole alkaloid antipsychotic and antihypertensive drug that has been used for the control of high blood pressure and for the relief of psychotic symptoms. It works by depleting monoamine neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine from central and peripheral synaptic vesicles. It belongs to the class of Rauwolfia alkaloids, derived from the plant *Rauwolfia serpentina*. While historically significant, its use has declined due to the availability of safer and more effective alternatives.
