Ribavirin is an antiviral medication used to treat certain viral infections. It is a nucleoside analogue that interferes with viral RNA synthesis, thereby inhibiting viral replication. Ribavirin is not effective against all viruses and is often used in combination with other antiviral drugs.
Used in combination with other medications to treat chronic hepatitis C and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection.
Significant teratogenic effects; contraindicated in pregnancy and in male partners of pregnant women. Can cause hemolytic anemia.
Outcome:
Increased risk of lactic acidosis and hepatic steatosis.
Mechanism:
Synergistic mitochondrial toxicity.
Outcome:
Increased risk of mitochondrial toxicity.
Mechanism:
Additive effects on mitochondrial function.
Outcome:
Increased Ribavirin Absorption
Mechanism:
Enhanced Bioavailability
Most likely new development will be focused on improved drug delivery systems for RSV treatment (Year: 2025, 70% confidence).
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low likelihood of any major regulatory changes for ribavirin in the next 2 years (<5% probability).
