Rifabutin can cause uveitis (inflammation of the eye). Patients should be monitored for symptoms such as eye pain, redness, or blurred vision.
Outcome:
Increased risk of uveitis
Mechanism:
Pharmacokinetic interaction (CYP3A4 inhibition)
Outcome:
Increased rifabutin levels
Mechanism:
CYP3A4 inhibition
Outcome:
Decreased rifabutin absorption
Mechanism:
Chelation/binding
Most likely new formulation: Liposomal rifabutin for improved tissue penetration (Year 2026, 60% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and emerging resistance patterns, there is a 20% likelihood of increased restrictions on rifabutin use in the next 5 years.
