Brand: Miacalcin, Fortical
Calcitonin Salmon is a synthetic version of the hormone calcitonin, which is naturally produced by the thyroid gland in humans and by the ultimobranchial glands in fish. It is used to treat conditions characterized by excessive bone breakdown, such as osteoporosis and Paget's disease. Calcitonin salmon works by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, cells responsible for bone resorption. This helps to slow down bone loss and promote bone formation, although the effect on bone formation is less prominent. It belongs to the class of drugs known as antiresorptives.
For the treatment of osteoporosis, Paget's disease of bone, and hypercalcemia.
Outcome:
May decrease the effectiveness of calcitonin salmon.
Mechanism:
Lithium can interfere with calcium metabolism.
Outcome:
Additive effects on bone density.
Mechanism:
Both drugs inhibit bone resorption.
Outcome:
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Mechanism:
Additive effects on calcium levels.
