Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant primarily used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in the brain, which helps regulate mood, anxiety, and other functions.
For depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults (18-24 years of age) taking antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders. Closely monitor patients for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior, particularly during the initial few months of a course of drug therapy, or at times of dose changes, either increases or decreases. Advise families and caregivers of the need for close observation and communication with the prescriber.
Outcome:
Increased risk of QT prolongation and torsades de pointes
Mechanism:
Sertraline can inhibit the metabolism of pimozide.
Outcome:
Increased bleeding risk
Mechanism:
Both drugs affect platelet function.
Outcome:
Potential for increased sertraline side effects
Mechanism:
Both have serotonergic effects.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release sertraline for improved patient adherence (Year: 2025, 70% confidence).
Based on current usage patterns and reported adverse events, there is a low ( <5%) likelihood of any major regulatory changes to sertraline's labeling in the next 2 years.
