Brand: Bridion
Sugammadex is a selective relaxant binding agent used to reverse the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs), specifically rocuronium and vecuronium, during surgery. It belongs to a class of drugs known as modified cyclodextrins. Sugammadex encapsulates the NMBA molecules, rendering them inactive and allowing for faster recovery of muscle function. It is generally used when rapid reversal of neuromuscular blockade is needed or in cases where profound neuromuscular blockade is present.
Reversal of neuromuscular blockade induced by rocuronium or vecuronium in adults and children undergoing surgery.
Outcome:
Rapid reversal of neuromuscular blockade, potential for recurrence
Mechanism:
Encapsulation and inactivation of vecuronium
Outcome:
Decreased efficacy of torasemide
Mechanism:
Competition for renal excretion
Outcome:
Reduced efficacy of hormonal contraceptives
Mechanism:
Potential displacement from binding proteins
Most likely new formulation: A modified sugammadex with broader NMBA binding capabilities (Year: 2026, 70% confidence)
Based on increasing surgical procedures and the need for rapid reversal agents, sugammadex use is predicted to grow by X% within the next 5 years.
