Sulfasalazine is a combination drug containing sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). It is primarily used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. It acts locally in the colon to reduce inflammation. Sulfasalazine is also used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. While its exact mechanism in rheumatoid arthritis isn't fully understood, it's thought to involve its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.
