Buserelin is a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. It works by initially stimulating, then suppressing the release of gonadotropins (luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone) from the pituitary gland. This leads to a decrease in the production of sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone) by the ovaries and testes, respectively.
Used to treat prostate cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and certain cases of precocious puberty.
