Treatment of mild to moderate community-acquired pneumonia.
Severe liver injury, including acute hepatic failure requiring liver transplantation, has been reported. Telithromycin is contraindicated in patients with myasthenia gravis. Exacerbation of myasthenia gravis and new onset of symptoms have been reported. Loss of consciousness may occur. Telithromycin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to telithromycin or any of the macrolide antibiotics.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Telithromycin inhibits CYP2C9, increasing warfarin levels.
Outcome:
Increased theophylline levels
Mechanism:
Telithromycin may inhibit theophylline metabolism.
Outcome:
Increased telithromycin absorption
Mechanism:
Food enhances telithromycin absorption.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation (Year: 2026, 30% confidence)
