Brand: Cytomel, Triostat, Liothyronine Sodium
Triiodothyronine (T3) is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone, a key regulator of metabolism, growth, and development. It affects nearly every cell in the body. T3 is considered the more active form of thyroid hormone compared to thyroxine (T4). It's primarily prescribed for hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones. T3 belongs to the endocrine hormone class.
Used to treat hypothyroidism, myxedema coma, and occasionally as an adjunct in thyroid cancer suppression therapy.
Outcome:
Altered thyroid hormone levels
Mechanism:
Amiodarone can inhibit the conversion of T4 to T3.
Outcome:
Reduced T3 absorption
Mechanism:
Cholestyramine binds to T3 in the gut.
Outcome:
Reduced T3 absorption
Mechanism:
Antacids can alter gastric pH and affect T3 absorption.
Most likely new formulation: sustained-release T3 for improved patient compliance (Year: 2026, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial activity, there is a low (5%) likelihood of a major regulatory change in the next 2 years.
