Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a naturally occurring bile acid used to treat certain liver and biliary conditions. It acts by decreasing the amount of cholesterol secreted in bile, preventing the formation of gallstones, and improving bile flow. UDCA is classified as a hydrophilic bile acid, meaning it is water-soluble and helps to protect liver cells from the damaging effects of hydrophobic bile acids.
For treating primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), dissolving certain types of gallstones, and improving liver function in various cholestatic liver diseases.
Outcome:

Mechanism:
Binding of UDCA to aluminum
Outcome:
Potentially reduced UDCA absorption
Mechanism:
Altered gut flora
Most likely new formulation: Controlled-release formulation for improved patient compliance (Year: 2025, 80% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a 70% likelihood of UDCA being investigated for further therapeutic applications in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease within the next 5 years.
